I want a nice brick house sitting on a green hill,

with a little wood shop shed beside a garden overflowing with life.

I want a back porch tea room with windows

that fill with light in summer,

and glisten with the glow of a fireplace in winter.

I want a long drive that runs through trees

and a fence that keeps the world outside.

I want a little family gathering around me,

to pray and give thanks.

I want a small house for my parents at the end of the drive,

with bookshelves for Dad,

and a windowsill for Mom with room for as many plants as she wants.

I want a couple good dogs, to watch over everyone when I’m not there.

And a little stable with a few good horses.

By God, I would fight the devil, walk to the sun, and face the world to get there.

And when I die,

I’d ask to be buried on that hill,

and I hope no one cries when I do,

because if I am laid to rest somewhere like that,

I won’t be sad or scared for a single minute.
